AS 7532 Audible Warning Devices
The closing date for comments – Monday 12 May 2025
The AS 7532 Audible Warning Devices is now open for Public Consultation.
How this product helps the rail industry
AS 7532 provides the rail industry clear and updated requirements for audible warning devices for locomotives, self-propelled passenger rolling stock, infrastructure maintenance rolling stock, light rail/trams and road rail vehicles.
Audible warning devices are an important rail safety system to alert the general public and rail workers in the vicinity of rail vehicle movement. The update to AS 7532 includes the option to consider new technologies in an effort to try and minimise adverse impacts of noise on nearby communities. This review of AS 7532 adds requirements for light rail/trams and road rail vehicles not included in the current revision.
About
This is the first review of the Standard since AS 7532 was initially published in 2016. The Development Group has undertaken a review of international standards, new technologies and research papers in defining proposed amendments to the Standard.
The aim has been to align with the current requirements with more contemporary Standards where possible, whilst also developing options to potentially minimise adverse impacts of noise to nearby communities.
The industry should review the new requirements and identify what improvements can be applied to existing and future rail fleets. AS 7532 should be reviewed in conjunction with the RISSB Code of Practice – Rail Traffic Horn Use.
