AS 7644 Rail Corridor Access – Review

The closing date for nominations – Monday 17 March 2025

The Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB) is seeking nominations to join a Development Group to review AS 7644 Rail Corridor Access.

How will this help the rail industry?

Rail corridor access is an ongoing and relevant issue of ensuring the safety of members of the public. Unauthorised access significantly increases the risk of rail safety incidents – by adopting this Standard, RTOs can identify means to reduce the likelihood of serious safety incidents occurring.

Further, a more harmonised national rail industry will be more cost-efficient as well as being more competitive with other modes of transport.

About

AS 7644 is undergoing a review and will consider new technologies and revised network rules currently used to prevent unauthorised access within the rail corridor. Adoption of the AS 7644 Standard is likely to lead to a significant reduction in safety risks associated with rail incidents e.g. collisions with trains, suicides.

Reduction in incidents can potentially save organisations a significant amount in incident management, loss of production or failure to meet targets and contractual requirements due to such incidents.

Time commitment

Development Group membership is voluntary and requires the support of your organisation to attend and contribute. There will be 2-3 meetings held between April and September 2025. Further information on the responsibilities of a Development Group member can be obtained from the RISSB Website.
