AS 7715 Train Detection Standard
The closing date for comments – Tuesday 22 April 2025
The AS 7715 Train Detection Standard is now open for Public Consultation.
How this product helps the rail industry
Effective train detection is key to the safe railway operation. Since the last issue of AS 7715 axle counters have become widespread in Australia. This update to AS 7715 ensures that the latest axle counter technology has been captured by cross referencing to the recently released AS 7651 Axle Counters Standard.
AC Electrification is becoming more widespread in Australia. This standard ensures that the interfaces within an AC Electrified railway are properly considered when designing, installing and maintaining train detection systems.
RISSB has engaged a highly experienced Development Group representing all significant RIMs across Australia. The review that they have undertaken has ensured that this standard is current and represents good practice.
About
The purpose of this standard is to provide the Australian rail industry with a set of mandatory and recommended requirements for the detection of all trains/rolling stock/rail vehicles to ensure that the signalling system receives reliable, accurate, sufficient and up-to-date information regarding the position and movement of all detectable trains/rolling stock/rail vehicles necessary for the safe control of the railway.
The standard addresses the requirements of the train detection system for the use of signallers and other operators. It spans accuracy and detail of train detection information and sufficiency of update frequency such that the signaller or other operator can safely control the movement of trains, including (so far as is reasonably practical) during periods of failure.
