Call for Public Consultation – Rail Transport of Dangerous Goods Code of Practice

The closing date for comments – Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

The Rail Transport of Dangerous Goods Code of Practice is now open for a 30-day Public Consultation.

How will this help the rail industry?

Your contribution to this Code of Practice (CoP) will help provide the rail industry good practice risk management considerations for RTO’s in addition to the practical application of the National Transport Commission’s Australian Dangerous Goods (ADG) Code. This Code of Practice complements the ADG Code by highlighting rail specific requirements.

About

This CoP is intended for all Australian RTOs involved in some aspect of the transport of dangerous goods. This includes RSO’s and RIM’s as well as consigners of the dangerous goods.

The document seeks to assist the rail transport industry in effective and efficient methods of implementing the requirements of the ADG Code and operate the railway safely as required by Rail Safety National Law (RSNL) safe So Far as is Reasonably Practical (SFAIRP).

The scope of this CoP focuses on the planning and preparation of dangerous goods transport, and the safe operation of rail vehicles with dangerous goods. It does not replace or modify the Australian Code for the transport of dangerous goods by Road & Rail Edition 7.9, 2024 (ADG) and regulations and should be read in conjunction with the latest version of the ADG and the RISSB CoP for ‘Loading of Rail Freight’.

RTO’s shall always consult the full text of the ADG and any applicable state or territory legislation for comprehensive guidance on the transport of dangerous goods.
