Calls of Public ConsultationHelp harmonise Australia's railways by providing feedback on one (or more) of five industry Standards that are closing their public consultation program. AS 7518 Rolling Stock Suspension
This Standard provides the requirements, recommendations, and guidance for rolling stock suspension and the requalification of springs and dampers. The requirements aim to reduce the risk of hazards due to inadequate design or maintenance of suspension components. Visit this page for more information
AS 7520.4 Body Structural Requirements Part 4
This Standard provides requirements for the structural strength of railway locomotives, freight vehicles, passenger vehicles and infrastructure maintenance rollingstock and one of its main purposes is to minimise risks to train crew and members of the public in the event of collisions or derailments. Visit this page for more information AS 1085.18 Railway track material Part 18: Screw spikes and threaded inserts
AS 1085.18 provides manufacturers and purchasers with performance requirements for steel screw spikes and threaded inserts for use with sleeper plates, fastenings, and sleepers in railway permanent way. Visit this page for more information AS 7702 Rail Equipment Type Approval
This Standard seeks to encourage harmonised type approval processes by providing guidance on: * Cross acceptance (mutual acceptance) between rail transport operators and suppliers
* Minimum requirements for product information/acceptance pack documentation
* Recognising the competency of those undertaking type approval evaluation
* Recognition of other applied (applicable) type and trails testing. Visit this page for more information. AS 7635 Track Geometry
The purpose of AS 7635 Track Geometry is to provide a harmonised and consistent approach to managing track geometry across jurisdictions. First published in 2013, this updated Standard provides guidance to rail infrastructure managers and other responsible parties tasked with the design, construction, commissioning, monitoring, maintenance, and modification of rail tracks in Australia. ONRSR's New Safety MessageONRSR published a new Safety Message yesterday highlighting some of the key good practices and requirements for effective management of railway bridges.
RTOs must consider a range of factors, including the likelihood of a hazard and the degree of harm to determine what management practices are reasonably practicable to implement m should contain key details across six key areas: * Asset details
* Indicative risks and controls
* Systems and procedures / detailing
* Structural standards
* Inspection records
* Defect management. Read the full Safety Message here. ARA's AusRAIL Plus in November 2023Held at Sydney’s International Convention Centre (ICC) from November 13-16, AusRAIL PLUS 2023 will host six networking events, new and exciting activations, industry sessions, expert presentations and technical workshops. Rail Opportunities AustraliaWith $154 billion to be invested in rail over the next 15 years, the rail industry
needs to rapidly increase the size of its workforce and prevent attrition. The National Rail Skills Hub, supported by industry and RISSB and the ARA provides information on entry points and pathways to help people make a move into rail.
Such a pathway is offered by RISSB member Swietelsky Rail Australia who is hiring tradesmen in multiple fields and will provide training and learning opportunities to upskill to a role in rail. Just have a look at this Linkedin post if you or anyone you know would like to make the switch to rail.
OTSI MasterClass Webinar PresentationOur next MasterClass webinar will be delivered by Dr Natalie Pelham and Matthew Manchester from the Office of Transport Safety Investigations. The pair will present evidence that supported the organisation's decision to conduct a systemic investigation into worksite protection and share and discuss some of the emerging safety factors arising from the investigation such as limits on human performance that can occur when certain types of worksite protection are applied.
The webinar will be held on Wednesday, 26 April 2023 at 12PM (AEST).

SPAM 2023 Rail Safety Conference Delegate List Sales EnquiriesWe've recently been contacted by stakeholders who have received an email from more than one company purporting to have a 2023 Rail Safety Conference delegate list for sale. We've alerted our conference partner who is managing conference registrations and would like our Rail Safety Conference attendees to know that their details have not been passed on, we don't condone this activity, and this email is definitely SPAM and should be deleted immediately.
Rail RU Ok Day 27 April 2023Thursday, 27 April 2023 is Rail R U Ok Day and an important reminder to everyone that life’s ups and downs happen to all of us, but you don’t have to wait until someone’s visibly distressed or in crisis to ask them how they’re really going.
Check in with your workmates and keep the conversation on track and ask “are you OK?”
Initiating the conversation isn't easy, so here are some some tips from the Rail R U OK Conversation Guide on TrackSAFE Foundation's website about how to ask a work colleague R U OK.
* If they don’t want to talk let them know you’ll always be ready for them when they are or ask if there’s someone else they’d be more comfortable chatting to.
* Help them open up by asking questions like “How are you going?” or “What’s been happening”? or “I’ve noticed you’ve not quite been yourself lately. How are you travelling?”
* Mention specific things that have made you concerned for them like, “I’ve noticed that you seem really tired recently” or “You seem less chatty than usual” If you are looking for inspiration, the TrackSAFE Foundation has added more videos from champions to its resources page including one from Steve Butcher from John Holland.
