Click here Edition 52 February 2024 INSIDE THIS EDITION+ CEO message CEO MESSAGEYesterday we had a great RISSB MasterClass webinar on the subject of the Arc Infrastructure/Parallel Systems prototype autonomous freight wagon, also known as Hiivr Rail. We had almost 200 people join us, with a wide range of questions being asked online during the presentation (sometimes it’s like pulling teeth getting questions!). I think that this particular subject challenged our traditional view of railway economies of scale, with many of the questions on that subject. If one considers that this type of technology is much more about helping rail enter markets where it has traditionally struggled to compete (i.e. “last mile” freight movements) rather than long-distance freight, then it can be looked at and assessed through a completely different lens. And that’s the good thing about “innovation” – it’s not the next app, or the latest technology, etc. – it’s about challenging our traditional thinking, and applying our collective knowledge to new operating environments. For rail to continue to be successful we must continue to refine and initiate step-changes in our traditional operating models and, in parallel, apply our knowledge of market needs and gaps to develop new solutions for the industry. Finally, a great question from the group was “Is this a self-propelled wagon, or a locomotive that can carry a container?” – depending upon how you look at it you can end up with a vastly different range of challenges and opportunities!
