more than 50 nominations across five categories just goes to show how valued this event is by the rail industry. It has truly cemented itself on the rail industry calendar. And of course congratulations to all of our winners, highly commended and finalists. But also thank you to everyone who took the time to submit an award entry. Considering there is no IP when it comes to safety, RISSB is keen to explore how it can help further share industry safety innovations and the expand the footprint of influence of the Industry's safety champions. Damien White Winners of the 2024 RISSB Rail Safety Awards have been announcedThe winners of RISSB's third Rail Safety Awards were announced at a glittering Awards ceremony in Melbourne last night. The Rail Safety Awards were established in 2022 to recognise and celebrate individual and company safety achievements in the rail industry and promote good practice throughout the sector. The awards are open to any individual working in the rail industry, or an organisation operating in, or affiliated with, rail in Australia and New Zealand. This year, more than 50 nominations were received across five award categories with five winners announced last night. Industry Safety Professional of the Year Ann Tomlinson from Alium Works took home the coveted Industry Safety Professional of the Year for her collaboration with Metro Trains Sydney on the pioneering TLI42422 Certificate IV in Rail Safety Management. The course has significantly advanced their rail safety management practices. Community Safety The Community Safety Award was won by Queensland Rail for the roll out of their Mental Health Co-deployment Trial which successfully reduced the risk of both trauma and operational impacts for Queensland Rail staff, operations and customers. Frontline Worker Safety Initiative ARTC won the Frontline Worker Safety Initiative Award for their Sharing safety ideas to ‘Make a Change’ project which is a frontline employee-led initiative designed to encourage their workers to share and celebrate successful safety improvements they’ve made within their local teams. Safety Leadership Program The Safety Leadership Program Award was won by Sydney Train’s Safe Access for Maintenance Program which was initiated to address the issue of conducting safe and sustainable routine infrastructure maintenance with increasing network utilisation and fewer windows. Emerging LeaderFinally, this year’s Emerging Leader Award went Downer's Jason Zhou for his technical innovation in rail maintenance and mentoring and advocacy for young professionals in the rail industry. RISSB CEO Damien White said that all nominations told an important story about safety in the rail industry and their dedication to zero harm. "Congratulations to all our award winners and highly commended. This year’s finalists continue to inspire others to champion safety in the workplace and across the rail industry." The awards were judged by a representative industry panel, comprising members from RISSB, Victorian Department of Transport and Planning, Downer, ONRSR, ARA and Sydney Trains and scored according to set criteria including safety outcomes, risk mitigation strategies, project complexity and overall achievement, and supported by supplementary documentation submitted by awards nominees. Each category winner automatically qualifies as an Australasian Rail Industry Awards finalist in the 2024 Safety Excellence Award category.
