As we continue to roll out our strategy to better reflect our role as Industry’s partner in co-regulation, I’m expecting next year’s Work Plan to be far more responsive to the broad range of challenges and opportunities that our industry faces. The industry has never had a better opportunity to deal with our legacy interoperability and harmonisation issues through the work that the National Transport Commission (NTC) are undertaking, and the attention currently given to it by the National Cabinet. Sustainability opportunities are also front-and-centre, and RISSB’s work in this space is vital to ensure new technologies can be developed and implemented efficiently, and without creating further interoperability issues for the future. Assisting continuous improvements in our industry through embedding incident and best-practice learnings, is a fundamental foundation to our work. Particularly as we seek to be providing more responsive and more regular updates to our products. Stay tuned for the release of the 2024/25 Work Plan over the next few weeks! Damien White 2024 RISSB Rail Safety Awards winner spotlightSafety Leadership Program This week RISSB is profiling the Safety Leadership Program Award winner as part of the 2024 Rail Safety Awards winners spotlight series. The Safety Leadership Program Award was won by Sydney Train’s Safe Access for Maintenance (SAM) Program which was initiated to address the issue of conducting safe and sustainable routine infrastructure maintenance with increasing network utilisation and fewer windows. The SAM Program objective is to provide planned track access coverage across the Network using the highest possible level of safeworking for maintenance. The program consisted of trials that were conducted in three of the network Territories to confirm the window design. RISSB wishes to congratulate Sydney Trains and the SAM project team. We look forward to seeing how they continue to improve work efficiency and safety in rail. PRODUCTSAn update of AS 7460 Rail ManagementIn conjunction with an industry Development Group, RISSB has recently updated Australian Standard 7640 Rail Management. The Standard establishes general principles for managing rail throughout its lifecycle in track, excluding design and manufacture. The objective of this Standard is to assist rail infrastructure managers and other entities responsible for the selection, installation, and maintenance of rail by providing fundamental principles for rail management. It is an overarching document that establishes a roadmap to a suite of other Australian Standards containing details of various lifecycle stages of rail management. The adoption of Standards like AS7460, will help deliver successful technical innovation and industry improvements, for a safer, more productive and more sustainable Australian rail industry. Please email info@rissb.com.au for more information or to talk to someone about the Standard. GENERAL NEWSARA helping to improve gender diversity in railImproving gender diversity and inclusion in the Australian and New Zealand rail workforce is a key focus for the rail industry. The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) recently launched the Gender Diversity Data Report 2024, which is based on the Australian Government’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA). The report shows female participation in the rail workforce overall has risen from 24 to 28 per cent in 2022-23. The survey which was sent to about 220 rail organisations from April 2022 to April 2023 also showed that 26 per cent of CEOs in rail were female in 2022-2023, up from 16 per cent in 2020-21. The report shows some promising progress, but also recognises the important work that still needs to be done to improve gender diversity and inclusion for the future of rail.
