Whilst the RISSB community will continue to provide input into the Plan, the key changes that were introduced last year will again be applied in prioritising our projects for industry. The key inputs that inform the development of our annual Work Plan now include:
With respect to industry’s key risks, the graphical output from our Australian Rail Risk Model (ARRM) below illustrates the top 20 risks for our industry (measured by Fatality Weighted Index), with the numbers above the bars depicting the number of products included in the coming year’s draft Work Plan that are designed to address those risks (noting that a single product can address multiple risks). The ability to apply this quantitative data and other inputs into our Work Plan prioritisation process means we can be confident that the work we’re doing is focused on addressing industry’s most pressing issues and opportunities. If you have any further ideas on specific projects that RISSB can be working on please make contact with us (including the project details and expected benefits) at info@rissb.com.au. Damien White GENERAL NEWSAn Australian first trial to adopt a system of nationally standardised approvalsThere is a significant inconsistency in approval processes across Australian jurisdictions that has road and rail construction industry bodies and product suppliers calling for change. Australasian Railway Association research suggests inefficient processes cost the rail industry alone up to $40 million per year. Under the innovative agreement reached between the NSW and Victorian governments, any new product used in rail or road infrastructure projects must meet minimum regulatory, technical and safety standards to obtain type approval. The first-of-its-kind cross-border partnership is designed to create efficiencies, reduce costs and remove barriers to new technology being introduced that can perform better, benefitting Australia’s rail and road networks. Find out more about the trial and its impact on the Australian rail industry here. PRODUCTSCode of Practice to help determine vigilance timing cycles on rolling stockRISSB has begun collaboration with the rail industry to develop a Code of Practice (CoP) for the vigilance timing cycle. The objective of this CoP will be to provide rail transport operators (RTO's) with a prescriptive method for determining vigilance timing cycles on rolling stock. To achieve this, the CoP will consider interoperability issues across networks, rolling stock being fitted with multiple vigilance systems and address rail traffic crew human factors concerns. The CoP will also provide a standardised method of calculation and tables that prescribe the timing cycles for both task based or non-tasked based vigilance systems. These will be applied for the following categories of rail traffic operations:

TRAINING AND EVENTSDon't miss out on the next Undertake a Derailment Investigation courseDon't miss out on your chance to join our upcoming Perth Undertake a Derailment Investigation Course. This Nationally Accredited training course provides participants with an understanding of the principles, methods and requirements for investigating derailments. This in-person training will be held at ARC Infrastructure Perth on the 9-11 July 2024 (inclusive). Over the three days, participants will learn about the investigation processes, derailment theories, regulatory requirements, reports, triggers, maintenance requirements and so much more. The course will benefit anyone in the rail industry who is required to investigate derailments. Training will include how to apply how to apply RISSB’s Derailment Investigation and Analysis Guideline and once completed, course participants will receive a statement of attainment for TLIF5023 (from CERT, RTO ID 51333) To enroll for our course in Perth from 9-11 July 2024, please click the button below or contact training@rissb.com.au MEMBER SPOTLIGHT ON
