One of the ways they do this is to filter the information – through distortion (based on potentially misrepresented experiences), deletion (selectively apply or ignoring experiences), and generalisation (recognising patterns). Our lived experiences determine how accurate these filters are. One common generalisation is the notion that those of us that are “male, pale and stale” struggle to accept change and innovation. Whilst I’m sure there’s plenty of examples where that might be the case, the recent winner of the Australian Rail Industry Career Achievement Award couldn’t be any further from that generalisation! Phil Ellingworth, Chief Engineer at Metro Trains Melbourne, has been a long-term industry innovator, a champion of diversity, and a through gentleman. I sincerely congratulate Phil on this well-deserved award. Damien White GENERAL NEWSCongratulations to the winners of the 2024 ARI Awards!RISSB wishes to congratulate all the winners and finalists of last week's Australasian Rail Industry Awards. RISSB supported the Safety Excellence Award again this year, an award that acknowledges the very best in safety achievements in improving the health, safety and wellbeing outcomes by an individual or a team. We want to congratulate Queensland Rail, and the Mental Health Co-deployment Trial project team on their win. RISSB would like to again express our appreciation to our judges from NTC, ONRSR, MTM and ARTC. "RISSB is proud to recognise and celebrate all the great safety initiatives in the rail industry and continues to be committed to promoting the very highest standards of safety to keep workers in the industry and our communities safe every day." - Sharon Tang, General Manager of Stakeholder and Engagement, RISSB. To find out more and to view the other winners and finalists, you can visit the ARA website here. Enhancing interoperability across multiple interstate and intrastate networks Rollingstock utilisation is key to ensuring the safety of the rail interfaces between the rolling stock and the track infrastructure, as well as between other rail operations on our network. That's why last month, we released a White Paper: Streamlining the Rolling Stock Approval Processes. Industry has told us that the multiplicity of approval processes to operate rolling stock across Australia is a major deterrent to investment and innovation. This is why RISSB has worked so hard to initiate and champion the production of this Paper, to address this industry wide issue. You can find out more and read the White Paper by clicking the button below. To support the release of the Paper, we recently hosted a special RISSB MasterClass Webinar, where were joined by the author of the Paper, Klaus Clemens, Director of RMAus, and RISSB's GM of Products and Innovation, Sudha Niles. If you are interested in finding out more about the Paper, you can watch the webinar recording by clicking the button below. Increasing RISSB's focus on product adoption and implementation Over the financial year 2024 - 2025, RISSB will be delivering projects in our Work Plan that support industry priorities, change initiatives and national rail reforms. Last week we launched our Work Plan for 2024/25. The Plan is formulated from a robust set of criteria including feedback from members, stakeholders and governments, key safety risks from RISSB’s Australian Rail Risks Model (ARRM), national interests and regulatory priorities, major incident investigations outcomes and RISSB product usage statistics. We will continue to collaboratively develop and support the application of RISSB’s products to enable industry to move towards greater harmonisation and interoperability, promoting productivity, sustainability and safety for the rail industry. Click the button below to read our 2024/25 Work Plan. Recently we hosted a special RISSB MasterClass Webinar, where we talked about the new Work Plan and what it means for our members and for the wider rail industry. TRAINING AND EVENTSCall for Development Group Members – Review of AS 1085 Railway Track Material – Parts 2,3 and 10 We are currently seeking nominations from industry representatives and subject matter experts to review AS 1085 Railway Track Material:
Track material plays a critical role in maintaining a safe railway. This targeted review seeks to update three parts of this series to ensure the technical detail remains relevant and up to date. These are a suite of standards that RISSB has assumed accountability for, having been previously developed by Standards Australia between 2002 -2004. There is now an opportunity to update these to align with current practices in design and manufacturing. The closing date for nominations is Friday 13 September. Systems Engineering Society of Australia panel discussing Operational ReadinessLast week our Senior Standards Development Manager Cris Fitzhardinge joined the Systems Engineering Society of Australia panel discussing Operational Readiness. Alongside Dr Eryn Grant, Lucy Trueman, and Richard Hanrick, Cris explored a fictitious case study where a new process was being brought into a company. Over 100 people, both in person and online, joined in for what was a very enjoyable learning and social event. The panel discussed the criticality of operational readiness planning, stakeholder engagement, human factors thinking, and robust OR processes to ensure a smooth transition from project delivery to operations. The panel highlighted the need for early engagement in the project lifecycle and the need for front line personnel to be actively involved in the OR process. RISSB would like to thank SESA and Queensland Branch Chair Hitech Patel for the opportunity to be involved in this engaging and insightful discussion. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT ON
