MESSAGE FROM THE CEOWelcome to our very first edition of RISSB Connect. RISSB Connect is a refresh of our old The Whistle Board weekly newsletter designed to provide a more contemporary look and feel.
We recognise that often people can get overloaded when it comes to communications, so we’re mindful to keep RISSB Connect as a short, sharp weekly update on things of note that are happening within our industry, to take the opportunity to expand upon some of the more important initiatives that RISSB is leading, and to provide a more people-focused approach - there’s a lot of great work happening in our industry and it’s worthwhile for us to take the time to get know some of the people who are actively contributing to industry reforms. And there’s a communications survey in this edition so take the opportunity to tell us what you want to hear more (or less) about!

SPOTLIGHT ON ...
THE NATIONAL ROLLING STOCK REGISTERThe national rolling stock register is a system that will provide a single data source on rolling stock across Australia and a central platform for managing the rolling stock registration process. Once operational, rail infrastructure managers, rolling stock operators and asset owners will be able to update and access nationally shared data.
We sat down with RISSB Project Manager, Sudha Niles, to find out how this system will benefit the Australian rail industry.
Q Why do we need a national registration system?
The current system is inefficient; creating an unnecessary administrative burden for rolling stock owners and operators. For example, before trains are allowed onto another network, they must be registered and assessed first.
A new system would enable rolling stock to be registered on multiple networks simultaneously.
Q What are some of the benefits of the project?
* History of rolling stock will be centrally captured, including data associated with modifications such as gauge conversion
* Up-to-date data will be made available for other systems, such as wayside detection and other systems
* There will be improvements to safety and efficiency for assurance processes (management of risk, training and auditing)
Q Who requested this work?
RISSB is delivering this project on behalf of the National Transport Commission as a National Rail Action Plan initiative.
Q What work has been delivered so far?
We have created a database of all rolling stock registered in Australia.
Q What are the next steps?
We will be collecting data from rail operators this year.Planned future phases will scale up the system allowing rail transport operators to issue certificates, waivers and exemptions as we work toward the ultimate goal of a single point of registration and approval management

AS 7488 Railway Rolling Stock – Locomotive And Passenger Vehicle Flooring
AS 7488 is an important part of the Government’s ‘National Rail Action Plan’ (NRAP) through which RISSB is delivering a suite of rail component Standards – generally on high volume consumables. The key objectives of NRAP are to support local content policies, stimulate domestic manufacturing, de-risk supply chains and ultimately create Australian jobs; RISSB is proud to support this initiative.
