Fatigue Risk Management Rail Collaboration Group Meets 

The Fatigue Risk Management Collaboration Group met on 13 September, to share ideas and opportunities on good practice fatigue risk management including:

* The development of fatigue risk management principles and how these are helping to better manage risks

*Journey management methods for on-call workers responding to incidents 

* Training for train controllers and workforce planners

* Development of self-assessment tools to identify fatigue

* Prior sleep/wake model calculator that helps assess the hours of sleep in the prior 24 hours; the hours sleep in the prior 48 hours; the length of wake from awakening.

MAJOR PROJECTS

Good Practice in Asset Management Report

A critical component of safe operation of the railway networks is asset management. Over the years many different approaches have been developed, and improvements in technology continue to drive change in the way rail transport operators manage this. As part of the RISSB Major Projects portfolio, a report is being developed to provide further insight into this critical work. Drawing on case studies from other industries such as aviation and mining, RISSB has partnered with Jacobs to create an in-depth look at how the rail industry can take advantage of new and innovative ways to better manage assets, whether that be fixed infrastructure or rolling stock.

Last week RISSB’s Cris Fitzhardinge met with Paul Ferguson and Fleur Royes of Jacobs to discuss this project and the scope of works. Extensive research is planned to ensure a wide range of ideas and views are considered.

A draft report is expected later this year, with a final report expected to be available to RISSB members late Q2 2023.

National Rail Carbon Footprint Webinar

Join us this Tuesday for our next MasterClass webinar - The National Rail Carbon Footprint - Rail’s Critical Role In Decarbonising The Transport Sector By 2050.

This presentation discusses the findings of the national rail carbon footprint completed by Cress Consulting on behalf of RISSB in July 2022. This seminal study is the first time rail’s overall carbon footprint has been analysed at an industry level, paving the way for a more coordinated industry approach. 

The webinar will guide attendees through the purpose of the study, the challenges faced by the industry, and the context of rail’s contribution to the Australian carbon emission profile. 

The presentation will be delivered by Julia Seddon and Nadya Serje from Cress Consulting on Tuesday, 27 September at 12PM (AEST).

InnoTrans Kicks Off This Week 

The thirteenth annual Innotrans exhibition kicked off this week attracting 2,834 exhibitors from 56 countries. With a focus on sustainable mobility, some of the highlights of this year's event included:

* Hitachi Rail revealing a hybrid tri-mode which can switch between battery, electric or diesel

* Siemens Mobility presented its Mireo Plus B battery train to the public for the first time

* Stadler showed the Flirt H2, the first hydrogen train for the USA

* Spotty, DB's new train inspection robot, was on show.

One hundred and eighty delegates representing 60 Australian rail organisations made the trip to Berlin as part of an Australian contingent organised by the ARA.
