International Interest in RISSB’s Australian Rail Risk Model
(ARRM)Recently, RISSB was delighted to respond to the invitation of South Africa’s Railway Safety Regulator (RSR), to come and talk about ARRM, how it works, how people are using it, and how we went about the project to deliver it.
RSR are very keen to produce a risk model for their own railway so that their operators can enjoy the same deep appreciation of safety risk as we do through ARRM. After several days of discussions with RSR functional groups, RISSB had the pleasure of presenting to, and discussing with, RSR’s executive team.
We’re very proud of ARRM, we’re very pleased that it’s gaining international attention and we’re grateful to RSR for being such wonderful hosts!

Every week we'll be introducing our new Horizons 2 participants to you. This week say hello to Kirstin Macdonald, Harold Burnett and Andrew Barry.
I’m Kirstin Macdonald, a Planning & Performance Coordinator with Transdev Auckland. This means I plan for tomorrow and beyond. This can include timetable and roster creation, one-off changes and predicting locations for crew and stabling facilities. The growth of rail and the exciting projects this results in makes rail interesting. In five years, I want to be learning new skills, challenging myself and using the knowledge gained to lead the delivery of innovative solutions to resolve challenges faced by rail.
Hi, my name is Harold Burnett. I work for Rio Tinto as the Railway Division’s Performance & Analytics Superintendent. I lead the team responsible for setting the capacity of the network to ensure we are meeting our market guidance. Automation of the railway has presented different opportunities for operating the rail network and I want to stay involved in that space.
I'm Andrew Barry. Currently I’m a Safety Team Manger in the Customer Service Directorate at Sydney Trains.
