Collaboration to Identify Best Practice Safety for Australian Rail Workers RISSB, ONRSR and ACRI will join forces to identify world standard safety technology that can be deployed to protect workers on our nation’s rail networks.
The key objective of the joint undertaking is to explore and identify, on a global scale, existing technology and techniques for ensuring track worker safety on railways. It is hoped that by understanding their feasibility and applicability to Australian circumstances, local operators will be able to adapt and integrate the approaches here.
This project will form a critical component of a suite of related RISSB initiatives, offering both engineering solutions and exploring options around planning, communication and culture.

RISSB to Co-ordinate National SPAD Project A national project to develop a harmonised SPAD investigations form for the rail industry is close to kick-off.
Working with industry through the SPAD Group, and leveraging insights gained from our SPAD Precursors research, this project aims to develop an agreed, practical, and easy to complete form that captures the right information for use in Australia and New Zealand.
The form will be made available to the rail industry and will aim to enrich and provide consistency around information being recorded. For those rail organisations using the form, this will lend itself to analysis on a wider industry basis to increase our overall understanding of SPAD causation. The form (or forms) are also envisaged to encompass light rail as well as heavy rail.
Led by A/Prof Anjum Naweed from CQUniversity, the project will kick off in June.
Invitations to be part of a Development Group for the project will be through the SPAD Group.
Human Factor Managers Group Meets The Human Factor Managers Group (HFMG) met remotely on 19 May with attendance from key passenger, freight operators and RIMS as well as DoT and TfNSW.
Dr Kate Branford from V/Line was elected as the Chair of HFMG for the next 12 months. The meeting focused on a range of HF-related issues including a draft document outlining general and project type specific HF requirements. Group members provided an update on HF in their organisation.
ONRSR also presented on what it is doing in regards to HF.

RISSB Takes Over National Track Worker Safety Induction Course This month RISSB assumed management of the National Track Worker Safety Induction (NTSI) course.
Originally coordinated by the Australasian Railway Association, the course has been developed by the rail industry for those rail workers seeking accredited competency in TLIF2080 (Safely Accessing the Rail Corridor).
This program has been developed to make it easier for employees to move and work across jurisdictions and for employers to ensure their staff meet the national, agreed training requirements and aid in recognition and transferability of employee’s skills in rail. RISSB looks forward to working with the NTSI Committee and offering this course in the coming months. Further information will be made available as we move towards a delivery date. RISSB thanks the ARA for their stewardship of the program
RISSB May Webinars This week Carolyn Walsh, Chair National Transport Commission & Commissioner Australian Transport Safety Bureau took more than 180 webinar attendees on a sentimental journey and gave a brief overview of the National Rail Action Plan.
Next Week's Webinar
WillowRail's VP Infrastructure Solutions, Daniel Kalnins, will introduce you to the concept of digital twins, discuss the driving forces behind the digital enablement of rail and how using digital twin technology can enhance decision making and improve performance and reliability of rail networks.
