There are numerous instances where train horns are sounded for real (or maybe perceived) safety benefits, however rail companies are loath to reduce their usage because we prize our very good safety record. On the other hand, horn usage can be a nuisance to our network’s neighbours and of course rail companies are concerned about that too. There has been a great deal of work, both here and overseas, into this multi-faceted issue – RISSB’s project in this area will produce a discussion paper so that our industry can have an informed debate, perhaps culminating in an industry Code of Practice downstream. Human Factors Managers To Meet The Human Factors Managers Group (HFMG) will meet on 29 October remotely with light rail represented for the first time. The HFMG includes representatives of around 14 rail organisations. The meeting will discuss key human factors issues including trials of a new safety culture toolkit. AS 7601.1 Light Rail and Road Interfaces Part 1: Management Of Light Rail Vehicle Movement The Development Group met recently to discuss how light rail vehicle movements are managed at road intersections. This is a critical area for the Standard, with an agreement made to conduct further research into current practices and existing Australian Standards (the AS 1742 series in particular). Projects On Parade Each week we'll showcase a publication in our 2020 / 2021 work plan that we will be progressing in the coming year. Publication Type Standards Development Manager How to Deal with Railway Cybersecurity The digitization of rail systems has spawned countless innovations, improvements, and efficiencies. But this trend has also given rise to a proliferation of cybersecurity threats jeopardizing mission-critical systems like signaling, onboard, and others.
