AS 1085.10 Railway Track Material – Part 10: Rail Anchors

The objective of this Standard is to provide tests for standard performance requirements which manufacturers’ products must satisfy, and to permit flexibility in both product design and material.

Changes to the previous edition are as follows:

1. Change of title of the AS 1085 series (previously Railway permanent way material).
2. The referenced documents list has been revised.
3. Reference to withdrawn Standards AS 1213 and K1 have been removed.
4. The most recent version of the informative Appendix B, ‘Means of demonstrating compliance with this Standard’ has been included.

This Standard sets out the requirements for one-piece rail anchors for application to steel rails rolled in accordance with AS 1085.1. Dimensions and tolerances are not specified

A review of this Standard was completed in 2024, with the Development Group agreeing to the following changes:

• Removal of bearing area of 2,200 mm²
• New requirement for rail anchor to not damage or embed itself into the sleeper. The amount of damage or indentation that is acceptable is to be defined by the purchaser.

This change is due to it being impractical to test for a 2,200 mm² bearing load. This change also aligns with international practice for testing rail anchors.

This change enables rail anchors to meet the requirements of the Standard.

It is recommended that RTOs review their internal standards against this change as part of the next document review cycle.

Use of this Standard will reduce the risk of track failure through failure of rail anchors.
