Frequently asked questions
The objective of this Standard is to provide designers and manufacturers with requirements for dogspikes for use with steel rails.
This Standard sets out the requirements for 16 mm and 19 mm steel dogspikes with square shanks and 22 mm diameter round shank steel dogspikes for use with the steel rails specified in AS 1085.1.
A review of this Standard was completed in 2024, with the Development Group agreeing that no change was required and the Standard could be re-issued.
Dogspikes that comply with this Standard can be used by industry with confidence that they will meet the safety requirements needed for railway track.
It is recommended that RTOs review their internal standards and ensure AS 1085.8 is the minimum required Standard for the procurement and use of dogspikes.
Use of this Standard will reduce the risk of track failure through failure of dogspikes.
